the word de in the sentence asking where do you live.

I am trying to understand why one needs to ad the D' in the sentence D'où venez-vous? 

why not simply say :  Où venez-vous?   Why is the de important here?

D'où venez-vous? -- From where are you / where are you from.

The sentence où venez-vous is wrong. It would sound like "where come you" to French ears.

In french you always need an article be it definite or indefinite.
