I am trying to understand why one needs to ad the D' in the sentence D'où venez-vous?
why not simply say : Où venez-vous? Why is the de important here?

D'où venez-vous? -- From where are you / where are you from.
The sentence où venez-vous is wrong. It would sound like "where come you" to French ears.
In french you always need an article be it definite or indefinite.
