Thanks for clarifying. You only need the plus-que-parfait when there's another verb in the past and you want to make a point of saying that something had happened before something else happened.

It's the same in English: you'd only say "Titanic had come out in 1998" if that statement was accompanied by something like "before my son was born." If you don't have a second verb, then you just want the regular past tense: "I went to see Titanic when it came out in 1998."

My question is why is the Passé Composé tense correct in this sentence (Titanic est sorti en 1998) rather than the Plus-que-parfait (Titanic était sorti en 1998). I accept that it is probably the right answer but I just don't understand why that tense is used.
