In a recent writing exercise I was asked to translate, “I took the little creature in my arms and I took him back to his home.” You translated “took back” with ramener. Ramener stems from mener meaning to lead. As the dog was being carried surely the correct translation in this case is rapporter.
Translation of “to take back”.

Hi Alan,
Next time try to pin your query to the specific exercise...
I assume the French was -
Je l'ai ramené chez lui /moi?
Ramener is to take back or to bring back and you would not use rapporter as he is talking about an animal but even in the case of objects, ramener can be used :
Je vous ai ramené votre sac que vous aviez oublié chez moi = I have brought your bag back that you had forgotten at my house
Hope this helps!
