My comment is similar to Elizabeth's, so I hope your response will also be similar.

My answer to...

À ce moment-là, les étoiles ________ dans le ciel.

was "sont apparus". This is wrong because I didn't know that étoiles is feminine. But the only correction given was "ont apparu".

Bonjour Harry,

When you answer a test question asking you to fill in a blank space, it will give you the answer(s) that is ticked correct for the same test question in its multiple-choice format. Here, only "ont apparu" is correct in this multiple-choice format.

However, I will discuss this point further with my colleagues.

This has been asked before. The consensus seems to be that both versions -- être apparu and avoir apparu -- are correct. The difference being that être apparu focuses on the state of having appeared, whereas avoir apparu emphasizes the process of appearing.
