which letter do I hold to type in the required accent?

Use the letter on which the accent appears. So, to type "î" hold down "i" and then type the number corresponding to the desired accent.

There's a new easy way to type any language accent character by pressing F2 after the letter. eg a then F2 cycles through a à â.
It's called TypeAccent and it can be found at www.type-accent.com
