Can one use 'une pénalité' for 'penalty' or is that just used in rugby as opposed to soccer?

Un pénalty
This question relates to:French writing exercise "At the football [US: soccer] game"

Hi Pamela,
The word ‘pénalité’ in French is most often used in the context of other sports or general situations to mean a penalty or punishment but it’s not the standard term for a penalty kick in football.
Other English words like ‘corner’ for a corner kick is used too.
Hope this helps!
