Use of present in last sentence?

Use of present in last sentence?

"Espérons qu'ils gagnent une autre médaille d'or". Is not the intent to wish for a future happening?  So saying "Let's hope that they will win another gold medal" is correct?  "Espérons qu'ils gagneront une autre médaille d'or". ??

Hi Jane B.,

To add to what Jim said, this has been asked before and you might find the answers interesting.

In the sentence you quote, 'gagnent' is a present subjunctive and is a possibility just as the future indicative.

Bonne Continuation !

Bonjour Jane B.

I agree that there is a desire that the future will bring another medal.

What I question is whether the subjunctive mood should be triggered.   Why?

There is the expression of wish, emotion, and desire that the outcome will be another medal.

Espérons qu'ils gagnent une autre médaille d'or. Otherwise, I agree with you  -- "Espérons qu'ils gagneront une autre médaille d'or".
