Verb ending

The following is a question that was asked on one of the quizzes that asks for the verb ending.  The answer is te but I don't know why and I have reread the lesson several times but for some reason I still can't make sense of the ending.  Please advise.     La lettre que j'ai écri....te________The letter that I wrote(HINT: Add the correct verb ending)

Hi Debbie,

What I think is being tested here is your understanding as to how (with avoir) the past participle needs to concur with the previous direct object placed before the verb.

La lettre is the direct object appearing before écrire so the past participle écrit becomes écrite to reflect the feminine direct object La lettre.

Just to expand a little  --  had more than one letter been written then the construction involving que would have required the past participle to be written

écrites

Hope this helps.
