Here is a short synopsis of the CEFR levels:
The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEF or CEFR) was put together by the Council of Europe as a way of standardising the levels of language exams in different regions. It is very widely used internationally and all important exams are mapped to the CEFR.
The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is an international standard for describing language ability. It is used around the world to describe learners' language skills. The CEFR has six levels – from A1 for the most basic beginner to C2 for the very highest level of ability.
While A0 is not an official level in the context of the CEFR, it is used by some people to classify students based on the following criteria:
«Smattering of the language. Knows a few words and phrases. Can recognize the written form and identify what language it is.»
