When is passé simple used?
This question relates to:French lesson "Conjugate regular French -dre verbs in the historic past in French (Le Passé Simple)"

Only in written french instead of the passé composé, books, newspapers etc. Can be useful to sidestep all the pesky agreement rules in the passé composé.
