when talking about things in general or abstractly,

Referencing the lesson: 'Using le, la, l', les before nouns when generalising (definite articles)' why is 'Salut les filles' correct as 'les filles' refers to a specific group and not to a group in general. Thank you

I know this is a confusing subject, but sometimes the definite article narrows the meaning while at other times it is used to denote the general.

Salut les filles! -- (Hello to the girls!) Hi girls!  In this sentence, "les filles" means all the girls, not any specific group.
