Sorry but I don't have accents. Why is it "ressemblent a des ecailles" and not "aux ecailles"?

If you were referring to a specific set of fish scales, you would use the preposition aux with the definite article les as in aux écailles de poisson -- to the fish scales. However, in this context, the phrase describes the roofs in general, resembling fish scales, rather than a specific set of scales. Therefore, à des écailles de poisson is the appropriate construction to convey the general resemblance.
