Why isn't "faire noir" used to describe getting dark

I wrote "quand il a fait noir enfin" before reading the hint "quand la nuit est enfin tombée" but both seem to translate similarly.  Can you explain please?

Hi Kay,

You were given a precise hint for the expression which was required -

" Lit- when the night finally fell "

so this is why it is not accepted in this particular exercise.

Quand il a finalement/enfin  fait nuit/ noir

would be acceptable.

Bonne Continuation!
