Why not "se regardent pendant"?

Les deux armées ________ longuement.

The two armies look at each other for a long time.

"se regardent" was marked as the answer and "se regardent pendant" as wrong. IK don't understand why both are not acceptable.

Hi Davy,

"longuement" (for a long time) is the adverb modifying the verb se regardent.

"Pendant"  in this context would be a preposition and I suspect that is why it was not accepted.

Hope this helps.
