Why were animators at the ski lodge?

It says:

“...après le ski, nous revenons au chalet ....Le soir, les animateurs nous apprennent des chansons...”

After skiing everyone is back at the chalet...

The animateurs are the staff in the group charged with organising fun activities in the evening... 

I think the point is that animateur has many other meanings in French, it doesn't just mean animator, but also guide, leader etc. I haven't read the exercise, though, so perhaps it was a bunch of guys from Walt Disney.
