Translation query

Bonjour Madame,

In the sentence from the lesson "Il jouait au football quand il était petit." Should the translation not be as-

"He used to play football when he was young."(in place of played)

Please explain the reason.

What about saying you come from a country? does the same rules apply? IE "Je viens de France"

Non-abstract nouns in -eurThere is at least on expection--la fleur is feminine. Might be the only one but I think you should add it.

Can someone please define the difference between these two examples...du Pays de Galles and des Pays-Bas.Is the first considered singular and the second plural?
Wales is sigular whereas The Netherlands is plural, in French?

Can "these" ever be translated as "ce" as opposed to "ces" in French?What is the proper way to translate: "These are good family times" in French? Google Translate and Duolingo have it as "ce sont de bons moments en famille" but isn't "these" supposed to be "ces"? Confused! Please help!

Comments on pronunciation.

1) Could you please explain why 'papier' is pronounced with an 's' as it sounds like 'papSier'.

2) 'avec les mains et les pieds', To my ear 'pieds' sounds like 'lipsé' ... any help with understanding this pronunciation would be appreciated.
