I'm a French teacher of 30+ years. There isn't a huge difference between j'aime bien and j'aime beaucoup, but the textbooks teach that aimer bien = to really like and aimer beaucoup = to like a lot.

Bonjour Jeanne,
I agree that depending on the textbooks there is a difference in how 'aimer bien' and 'aimer beaucoup' is taught/explained. I gather it may be to help beginners in keeping in mind that 'beaucoup' means 'a lot'.
