Bonjour Luthien,

The difference between l’article partitif and l’article contracté is in their meaning.

L’article partitif means ‘some’ whilst l’article contracté means ‘from the’ / ‘to the'.

Article partitif :

Je mange des épinards tous les jours = I eat (‘some’) spinach everyday

J’ajoute du sel dans ma soupe = I add (‘some’) salt in my soup

Il boit du champagne = he is drinking (‘some’) champagne

Elle mange des noisettes = she is eating (‘some’) hazelnuts

article contracté :

Je viens du cinémaI am coming from the cinema

Je viens des halles = I am coming from the covered market

J’arrive aux Etats-Unis = I am arriving to the United States

Je vais au marché I am going to the market

I hope this is helpful.

Bonne journée!
