Tu es means “you are”
So when you ask someone Are you hungry?
It should be
Tu es faim?
But why are we saying?
Tu as faim?
In French, we use 'avoir' ( and not être) for expressing thirst, cold, hunger, fear, etc.
so it will be -
tu as faim? = are you hungry?
tu as froid? = are you cold?
tu as soif? = are you thirsty?
tu as peur? = are you frightened?
Take a look at the following Kwiziq lesson -
The French way to ask whether you are hungry is literally "do you have hunger?".
It is like saying "Do you have hunger or do you possess fear?"
becoz in french have verb is mostly used.
