When someone has time, could you please advise on how to address the States in Australia?   I get conflicting advice, eg. both à Victoria and en Victoria, en Queensland and dans le Queensland ...'

Hi Roger, 
You will get conflicting advice as there are no set rules ( just as for the American states).
It's normally determined by what sounds best -
So I would say -

en Tasmanie 
dans le Queensland 
dans le New South Wales
dans le Territoire ...

but 
À Victoria ( Dans le Territoire / l'état de Victoria) 
It's often useful to search for French holiday sites to these places.
