Avant d'avoir de leurs nouvelles

What would the difference in meaning be if you just said 'Avant d'avoir leurs nouvelles'?

Hi Tom,

The expression -

avoir des nouvelles de quelqu'un = to hear from someone

just as

prendre des nouvelles de quelqu'un = to get news from someone

so the preposition  'de' is idiomatic but crucial here.

Bonne continuation!
