Both examples are given in the lesson :
Marie est la plus intelligente fille de la classe
Marie est la fille la plus intelligente de la classe
Marie is the smartest girl in the class
and both are correct.

This has me confused. I thought that only certain adjectives precede the noun, most of them follow:
Marie est la fille la plus intelligente de la classe.
Cécile's response doesn't answer the question as to whether both examples are equally correct.
