in america, If you say "I took my exam" it means you were present. It does not refer to passing. If you took the exam and passed, then you say, I passed my exams. But you cannot say, I took when you received a pass or fail or grade.

Thank you for your input! The lesson does explain this difference:
"Passer un examen in French never means to pass an exam: it actually means to take an exam, with no implication of its outcome."
Therefore, to pass an exam is not to take an exam (= passer un examen).
