When to use étre and avoir?
The english translation seems same.
E.g: I had....

You seem to be doing exercises that are not in line with your level. I suggest you follow the lessons compiled for you by kwiziq.
To answer your question:
être — to be, avoir — to have. Depending on whether the main verb is transitive or intransitive, you will form compound tenses either with avoir (transitive) or être (intransitive).
