I was wondering if "je préfère rester dedans" would be an acceptable response?

Bonjour Steven,

You can't use "dedans" here because it literally means "inside of it". So, it would work if you'd already mentioned whatever "it" was:

Le tiroir est ouvert, les clés sont dedans = The drawer is open, the keys are inside

Prends le panier à linge et mets tes vêtements sales dedans = Take the washing basket and put your dirty clothes inside (it)
