Devoir- must vs Devoir- homework?

I am always confused, is it the same word or is there a difference in spelling?

Sanna,

the spelling is the same.

‘Devoir’ is used as a noun or a verb.

As a noun, it generally refers to an obligation/duty, or often to ‘ homework ‘ for students, mostly in plural form.

As a verb it is mostly used as a modal verb in semi-auxiliary form ( followed by an infinitive ), except for the particular usage of ‘ devoir ‘ in its own right as a verb translating as ‘ to owe ‘.

There are many good online bilingual dictionaries available free - wordreference is not perfect, but a good reference with definitions, translations and example sentences.

Bonjour Sanna,

Just to add to the great answers you already got from Maarten and Jim:

In French, "devoir" can also mean "duty"

In context:

C'est mon devoir de dire la vérité. = It is my duty to tell the truth.

I hope this is helpful.

Bonne journée !
