Is "etait donne" (with accents) definitely correct here? it's not "etant donne"? thanks

Thank you very much for spotting this bad typo: indeed, it should have been "étant donné", and thanks to you, it's now been fixed :)

I do know the expression "jeter son devoulu", but in this context, I would choose choisir or décider because it was after exploring options.
