Être/avoir

Hello, for this question:

Marie nous rejoindra ________ le restaurant. Marie will meet up with us when we've left the restaurant.

The correct answer is: quand nous aurons quitté

I answered: quand nous serons quitté, as I would say nous sommes quitté le restaurant.

So why is this aurons and not serons?

 Many thanks!

Esther,

both ‘ quitter ‘ and ‘ laisser ‘ conjugate with avoir in compound tenses.

Neither ‘ nous serons quitté ‘ nor ‘ nous sommes quitté ‘ are correct conjugations. Always ‘ nous aurons quitté … ‘ or ‘ nous avons quitté … ‘.

You might be thinking of conjugations with ‘ sortir ‘ or ‘ partir ‘ ?

To complement Maarten's answer:

The verb quitter is transitive, i.e., it has a direct object (le restaurant). Transitive verbs always use avoir as the auxiliary verb.
