Expressions clarifications

why is fringues not okay instead of vetements? Why is les toilettes not correct in this sentence " Oui, bien sûr, il est dans la salle de bains, sous le lavabo."?

Can we use the expression il y a in this sentence, insted of "où est"? Bastien, tu sais où est le panier à linge  ?

Bonjour Martina,

1. ‘fringues’ (= togs / threads) is an extremely familiar term that means ‘vêtements’ (= clothes).

2. ‘les toilettes’ is not an exact equivalent of ‘la salle de bains’ in French. It is used to describe the ‘restroom’ / ‘lavatory’ / ‘john’ / ‘loo’ rather than the room in a house where you have a bath / shower, such as ‘la salle de bains’.

3. ‘il y a’ instead of ’où est’ :

Bastien, tu sais s’il y a … Bastien, do you know if there is …

vs

Bastien, tu sais où est … = Bastien, do you know where is ...

I hope this is helpful.

Bonne journée !
