how about gagner?

Can gagner be used for passing an exam same as réussir/avoir/ obtenir? Am asking because i used it once while speaking to someone. After this lesson i wonder if i used it wrongly.

Bonjour Radhika,

Gagner is a transitive verb so takes a direct object.

It is used in situations of winning (an argument), or at sport, or to gain something -- profit, support or to augment a situation.

It is not apt in the case of achieving success in an exam situation, but I suspect that one could say that they won success in the exam. I don't see this usage as being appropriate grammatically, however.

This is my understanding  --  hope it helps.

Bonne journée

Jim
