How can de be an article contracté in "numéro de téléphone?

This question has been asked in one of the tests where there was a blank given for "de" and expected to be filled with an article contracté. Is "de" indeed an article contracté here? I'm doubtful.

Hi Priya,

The 'de' in numéro de téléphone' is not a contracted article but a preposition.

Maybe this list of 'articles contractés' which includes the preposition 'de' will help you.

Learn how to contract à / de with the definite articles in French

Bonne Continuation !

Salut Priya,

Téléphone is a masculine noun (Le téléphone)

If we need to make reference to the "numéro de le téléphone"  (that is, a specific telephone) we need to write "numéro du téléphone" where du is the contraction of de le (definite article).

If however, the telephone is non-specific then "numéro de téléphone is correct.

Hope this helps to explain for you.

Bonne continuation

Jim

I agree with Priya: numéro de téléphone does not have an article contracté. But then I don't know the entire sentence under question.

Bonjour Priya,

Could you give the exact test question and/or the lesson/exercise that you are referring to in your question please? It would be very helpful. ;-)

Bonne journée !
