How to say someones name

In one of the questions in my former test I shold translate ” your name is Thomas”. So I did ” tu t`apelles Thomas”, but got red mark on that, it should be ”tot`apelles Thomas”. I can´t see that alternative in the lesson about how to sat someones name. Would be good with an explanation on that one.

Bonjour Gunnel,

I have checked and it’s because you missed a -P

appelles

should have 2 -P’s and 2 -L’s .

We accept lots of errors like capital letter mistakes and even with the apostrophe but not with the double letters.

Hope this helps!

Bonjour Gunnel

"It's tempting to translate Je m'appelle... as I call myself... but despite this being its literal translation, this is not correct.

I call myself... implies one's real name is something else, or a choice over one's name.
-> My real name's John but I call myself / everyone calls me Jack.

In French, the equivalent of this is Je me fais appeler..., which has the same implication of choice over the name."

The text above, taken directly from the lesson, highlights the point that what someone is called or chooses to be called is not necessarily their birth name  -- I suspect that is why you "got a red mark"

I hope this helps you to understand this nuance,

Bonne continuation

Jim
