I used 'mas' for farmhouse which is what my dictionary said. Is this a word which is now out of date?

Hi Gill, 

A 'mas' is a provençal farmhouse, so it is a regional difference.

Thank you for your question! 'un mas' is a correct French word although it specifically describes a traditional farmhouse situated in the Provence and Midi regions in France (not in Dordogne, I'm afraid). 'Ferme' is the more generic term.
