Je lui envoye une message vs je l'envoye une message

Je lui envoye une message vs je l'envoye une message

I can see it has already been explained in this Q&A forum that lui is never changed to l', which is good to know.

My question is, I have seen envoyer in a list of 'verbs without prepositions' on another section of this website. I took that to mean it does not require à after envoyer, is this correct?

Is it because une message is added that it does require an à and therefore it becomes je lui envoye rather than je l'envoye?

I'm not sure how I should know whether envoyer requires le/la/les vs lui/leur?

Bonjour Nicole,

Just to add to Laura's answer, the verb is

envoyer quelque chose à quelqu'un to send something to someone

The something would be le/la/les

 The someone would be lui/leur

I couldn't find 'envoyer' in the lists I created, so maybe I missed it out.

The quiz question in the lesson was -

He sends him a message

As the something ( a message) is mentioned after the verb, you don't need to worry about it; it is just the someone,  which in this case is the indirect pronoun  'lui'.

Il lui envoie un message

Hope this helps!

Bonjour,

There is no preposition in front of the thing you're sending (so le/la/les).

There is a preposition (à) in front of the person you're sending to (so lui/leur).

Je l'envoie - I'm sending it.

Je lui envoie - I'm sending to him.

Je le lui envoie - I'm sending it to him.
