Joined words and divided words

Hello .

I was asking why is it .that some words are join when u speak them and other are divided when u speakin..why

Bonjour Samuel,

In French it happens that words are “joined” when they are written (and therefore spoken) because of something called ‘elision’. Here is a link explaining it in more details: elision

At other times, you can have words being linked when spoken (but not when written) because of something called ‘liaison’. Here is a link about it: liaison

It is all about the hiatus or avoiding the hiatus. Basically, it is making sure the sequence of words sounds more pleasing to the ear, like in English with ‘an + vowel’ (an appartment) for example.
