Am I missing the meaning altogether, or does not "lèche-vitrine" mean "window-shopping" - that is looking into shop windows and wishing you could buy what you see, without actually doing so?

You're correct that "lèche-vitrine" means "window-shopping". So, they started window-shopping but then, they couldn't resist buying things - which is what happens most of the time (window-shopping ends up in buying things) ;-)
