Nadine,

Although there is no difference in meaning between 'on’ and ‘nous’, they will be used in different contexts.

Nous" (formal/written French)

Traditional, formal pronoun for "we".

Used in written French, formal speech, and official contexts

Takes third person plural verb forms: "nous sommes" (we are), "nous avons" (we have)

Nous allons au cinéma = We're going to the cinema

"On" (informal/spoken French)

Originally means "one" but commonly used as informal "we" in spoken French

Much more frequent in everyday conversation

Takes third person singular verb forms: "on est" (we are), "on va" (we go)

On va au cinéma = We're going to the cnema

Key differences:

Formality: "Nous" is more formal; "on" is casual Usage

frequency: "On" dominates in spoken French; "nous" appears more in writing

Verb conjugation: "On" uses singular forms, "nous" uses plural forms

Context: Use "nous" in formal writing, presentations, or official situations; use "on" in casual conversation

Quick tip: If you're speaking casually with friends or family, "on" sounds more natural. If you're writing an essay or giving a formal presentation, stick with "nous."

Both are correct French - it's really about matching the formality level of your situation.

Hope this helps!
