omitted pronouns

Question

There are two phrases - 'les chiens qui se sont frottés contre' and 'dont le style ne va plus du tout avec' where the final pronoun (for 'it') seem to have been dropped. Is there any general guidance about when and why this happens ? If you could include the pronouns in these clauses, what would they be ?

That's a very interesting question! When 'avec / contre' are at the end of a sentence / expressions and not followed by a pronoun (such as the rule of thumb would suggest), it means that they are used as adverbs. This is the case in these two expressions. You can add the full expressions at the end if you wish to - but not necessary as one already knows what you are referring to.
