In this context the first day is treated as an incident happening in the past whose duration is short compared to the longer time frame of the story.

I know that these explanations all sound a bit arbitrary and hand waving. But you'll get a feeling for the right tense to use after a while. It is important to read a lot and not try to overthink it too much.
