Passé composé vs. passé simple in first sentence

The instructions ask us to use the passé simple, but the first sentence uses the passé composé instead (est née). Why don't we say naquit instead?

You're right. Le Passé Simple is correct here so we've added this as an option.

The passé simple is used in literature and in texts (books and articles) about history; in the latter instance, you could write "Elle naquit en 1492."
