The direct object pronoun "le" in the text is "him".
If you are doing pluperfect conjugation in A2, you might well be 'out of sequence', and not have covered the lesson Jim refers to before coming to this use of 'le' (or l'/la/les) as direct object pronouns followed by a verb (and not just as definite articles with nouns). It is quite a step from A2 lessons to B2. Remember 'lui' is an indirect object pronoun for him (or her), so would not be correct to replace the direct object, him, of the verb 'voire' in this sentence.
