taire vs se taire
Elles ont tu la raison...mais j'ai pensé taire est réflexive....?

Bonjour Ann !
You are correct in the sense of the reflexive form of the verb "taire" (se taire) is the most commonly used one, without hesitation.
Literally, "se taire" means "to keep oneself quiet / to shush oneself".
But the regular form of the verb also exists, as used here, and simply means "to keep [something] quiet":
Elles ont tu la raison pour laquelle elles étaient là.
They kept the reason why they were there quiet.
I hope that's helpful!

Bonjour Ann,
I get the sense that your phrase «elles ont tu la raison» possibly is «elles ont toutes la raison» but I am uncertain about that.

Alors, j'ai dû faire la recherche de répondre à votre question. Il y a une personne qui donne ces explications:
Taire = withhold/keep silent about.
Se taire = to be quiet, to shut up, to say nothing, to zip it.
Pourtant, la dictionnaire Collins-Robert nous donne:
(transitive verb) Taire = [secret, nom] to keep to o.s.
(intransitive reflexive verb) )Se taire = (= s'arrêter de parler) to fall silent, to stop talking
(= ne pas parler) to be silent, to be quiet
tais-toi! be quiet!
taisez-vous! be quiet!
Exemples: Il faut savoir garder le secret, taire et protéger nos cathédrales dans la nuit, respecter nos madones, nos anges et nos faucons de feu.

Sur la réforme des institutions, rien n'était acquis et M. Jospin a choisi de se taire.

J'espère que cela vous aidera et bonne chance!
