In the sentence "Le nouveau James Bond est sorti la semaine dernière", "sorti" is followed by a noun. So you should qualify your assertion that "When sortir is followed immediately by a noun (as opposed to a preposition), it uses avoir as the auxiliary" by excluding the case where the noun is a component of an adverbial phrase.

The James Bond sentence
This question relates to:French lesson "Sortir can be used with avoir or être in Le Passé Composé depending on its meaning in French"
Asked 1 day ago
Bonjour P.,
The "noun" the lesson refers to is a direct object specifically, not just any noun that happens to follow the verb.
Here, "la semaine dernière" is a time phrase (= last week) while the "noun" referred to in our lesson is "a direct object":
Marc est sorti ce matin. = Marc went out this morning.
-> ce matin = time phrase
J'ai sorti les poubelles ce matin. = I took the bins [US: the trash cans] out this morning.
-> les poubelles = the bins [ US: trash cans] = direct object
I hope this is helpful.
