In spoken french, is it more common to drop the indefinite article when making an appointment. i.e prendre rendez-vous rather than prendre un rendez-vous? What's most common in everyday spoken french?

You can actually say both without a change of register, so it is purely a matter of personal choice.

In my understanding both versions are in common usage. The difference seems to be that "prendre un rendez-vous" is used more with formal appointments, whereas "prendre rendez-vous" applies to informal situations.
