Sorry, Shashank, but the verb ''expier''is much too strong; it means ''to atone for something'' rather than to ''make amends''.
1. Atoning for a moral or religious fault
Il doit expier ses péchés = He must atone for his sins
2. Paying for a crime or mistake (often through suffering)
Elle a expié sa faute par des années de souffrance = She paid for her mistake through years of suffering
3. Serving a prison sentence (formal/literary register)
Il a expié sa peine en prison = He served his sentence in prison
