Using avoir mal a

I am unsure why "Antoine a mal aux épaules" is correct since "épaules" is femine and should use the article la unless "é" negates the use of " l' ".  Thank you.

Bonjour Bruce,

You're right that the French word "épaule" is feminine. However, here, it is in its plural form here (see the -s at the en of the word). Therefore, when plural (whether the word is masculine or feminine), you will use "à + les" -> aux

un genou = a knee (masculine singular):

J'ai mal aux genoux

une maina hand (feminine singular):

J'ai mal aux mains
