In the lesson: Raise your hand please, I used votre main since clearly another person is involved, the one telling someone else to raise her hand. Why is la main the correct usage? Thanks much.

Using votre main
This question relates to:French lesson "Using le, la, les with body parts and clothing (definite articles)"
Asked 4 years ago

Hi Liz,
You would use -
Levez la main si vous connaissez la réponse! = Raise your hand if you know the answer
For instance to a group whether you said tu or vous to them.
Each person raising their own hand.
If you said -
Levez les mains!
Each would raise both hands in the air.
Hope this helps!

There is no possibility for misunderstanding if you say la main in this case, either to a group or to a single person (formal "you").
