I don't understand when to use dont or que.

You might start by looking at the two following lessons on those two relative pronouns -
'que' is more straightforward than 'dont' so maybe start with this -
Que = Whom/which/that (French Relative Pronouns)
Dont = Whose (French Relative Pronouns)
