I thought they were the same as English's what and which but I feel like that's wrong.

Please take a look at the following associated Kwiziq lessons :
1. que
Que = Whom, which, that (relative pronouns)
2. quel
Questions: Quel, quels, quelle, quelles = Which / what ?
There are used in French in very different situations.
