I'm unclear on when to use dernier and when to use passe and this lesson doesn't address that. I hear la semaine derniere and la semaine passe.

There is more than one way to skin a cat. Just like in English, where you can say "last week" ,or "the previous week", or "the week past", in French you can say:
la semaine passée
la semaine dernière
la semaine précédente

But I have just been marked as wrong for le mois passé..
yes, the lesson is about dernier but I didn't know that when I did the Kwiz.
